Fiscardo

fiskardo

Fiscardo is located in the north of Kefalonia. It is the best place to make day trips to Ithaca and Lefkada, since it offers a ferry connection as well as a large marina if you are a boat owner.

It is the most cosmopolitan area of Kefalonia with excellent hotel facilities, superb restaurants and a large variety in nightlife. Despite its cosmopolitan profile, the architectural tradition of the island is kept unaffected.

In Fiscardo one will be amazed from the preserved houses with red tiles and small balconies with colorful railings.
The reason behind this is, lies in the fact that it’s the only region of Kefalonia which was not hit by the devastating earthquake of 1953.

Assos

assos 1

In the northern part of Kefalonia lies a beautiful village, Assos, belonging to the municipality of Erisos. The village is built like an amphitheatre around the peninsula, surrounded by pine and cypress trees awaiting the visitor to discover it.

Prepare your camera because the scenery is absolutely unique. It is a traditional village which has retained the traditional Ionian architecture for the most part.

The astonishing attraction of this village is its castle, which along with that of Agios Georgios is the most important of Kefalonia. It was built in the late 15th century to protect inhabitants from pirate raids. Great battles were fought here, in order to defend the island of Kefalonia. In the early history the castle was used as a prison from the Greek government.

Although this side of Kefalonia is known for its beach Myrtos, several small and hidden beaches are also worth visiting.

Lixouri

Lixouri is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece and the second largest city of Kefalonia.
Here you will find many hotels and inns, restaurants, little charming cafes and several bars to enjoy an evening drink.

Lixouri is the homeland of the great Greek satirical poet Andreas Laskaratos. His statue, decorating the citys promenade has his back turned towards Argostoli, according to tradition.

What characterizes the city of Lixouri is the remarkable affinity in arts and letters. The foundation of the second oldest Philharmonic Orchestra of Greece lies in Lixouri, right after that of Corfu.

The area around Lixouri has many beautiful beaches. Some of them are the Platia Ammos Beach (located on the road towards Kamiranata), the Mega Lakkos Beach with a length over 5km (south of Lixouri), the Vatsa Beach (very close to Lixouri) and the beach of Kounopetra, which is probably the most famous of them all. Kounopetra took its name from the rock that was moving rhythmically in the sea, a phenomenon which stopped after the 1953 earthquake.
